Panto Pandemonium!

Thank you to all parents for the wonderful efforts with the costumes for the show, Panto Pandemonium.

The children and audiences enjoyed the performances with some lovely solo singing from members of the casts. It did seem like pandemonium at times with cancelled rehearsals, illness and school closures but it was "alright on the night"!

The children did very well in all the shows and performed beautifully. Some of the infant audience thought it was a wicked witch!!

Thank you again for your help and we hope you enjoyed the shows. Our collection raised £173.17 for Little Haven's Children's Hospice. Thank you for your generosity.

Our 2p harvest collection raised £173.94 and the non-uniform day raised £255. Thank you for your generosity.

In order to maximise learning for the pupils at this school, we have decided to re-structure the day slightly. From Monday 18th October, pupils will be able to walk straight into class at 8.40am from the playground and settle themselves before the start of registration at 8.50am. The start time remains at 8.50am so pupils will not be marked late unless they arrive after this time.

Lunch time will now be from 12.10pm to 1pm for all pupils and home time will remain at 3.10pm.

These changes will enable us to engage in creative activities in the morning to support the children's learning in Maths and English.

Assemblies will move to the end of the school day which will align with the Infant School and we look forward to parents joining us for class assemblies in the Spring Term.

Please be aware of traffic at the zebra crossing on Gloucester Avenue. Cars/vans are driving at speed along this road and are sometimes unaware of the zebra crossing which many children use.

Could you please make your children aware especially if they walk home alone.

After School Clubs

If, for any reason, an after school club is cancelled, your children will be kept in school until the club finishing time. For bad weather, please ring after 2.30pm to check if a club is taking place. If it is cancelled, leave your child's name and this will be passed to the teacher and your child will then be allowed to leave at 3.10pm.

We do not ring parents if a club is cancelled due to the large numbers involved. The children are given an alternative activity until the normal finishing time.

Morrison's Let's Grow Campaign

A reminder that we have started to collect vouchers for the Morrisons Let's Grow campaign.

The scheme aims to help schools capture the imagination of children and show them that food doesn't just come from supermarkets. By collecting vouchers, children will have the opportunity to grow their own food in the school grounds.

Vouchers can be redeemed by the school for new gardening equipment including seeds, spades and greenhouses. So please do support us.

A stranger is someone you don't know. Most strangers are nice but some are nasty and want to hurt children.

We were fortunate enough to receive four awards this year:

Aimee, Chloe, Laurel and Charley attended the awards evening on Friday 17th September and collected the awards. Each school was also given an indoor watering can and a selection of seeds.

Co-op Community Cards

Please help the school to raise funds by collecting one of the Community Cards we have received from the Co-op. The card can be used in any Chelmsford Star and points are added to it each time you shop.

Points are then converted into cash to which the Co-op add an extra 50% to the funds for our school. If you would like a card, please call into the office.

Clothes and Shoe Recycling

Each year the British public throw away over one million tonnes of clothing and household textiles - the majority of these could either be reused or recycled.

The Clothes Collector and Shoe Friends initiative aims to teach school children that unwanted clothes and textiles should be seen as a resource rather than a waste. Working in partnership with the local authority, the initiative creates waste awareness and provides the school with re-use and recycling facilities.

On an average week, the Clothes Collector get 200 tonnes of textiles, clothing and shoes. This is sorted and exported for re-use, although 10 per cent that isn't fit for re-use will be put into wiping cloths, 5 per cent will be sent for flocking and felting, leaving a minimal 5 per cent waste, incorporating household rubbish, hangers and single shoes.

If you have any unwanted clothes, household textiles or pairs of shoes please do bring them in and support this worthwhile initiative. We collect all clothes and textiles (in any state) and wearable shoes (not broken or worn out) including dance shoes, football boots, roller boots etc. Please make sure they are paired.

The school will receive £5 for each sack of clothes or household textiles which would otherwise be thrown into the waste bin.

Normandy

Everyone had a good time at Normandy. The children met french friends, taking part in joint activities with them. Getting the chance to practise their french speaking, they found that they liked many of the same things. They learned a lot about World War ll and its effect on France. Due to a coach breakdown, they were unable to visit the caramel factory but instead went for a walk and tried french chips and crepes.

Summer Bounce

Walk to School Week

A reminder that Walk to School week takes place from 17th to 21st May.

Please support your child in this initiative by encouraging them to walk to school. This is not only the healthy option, because of the exercise, it also helps to cut car journeys and pollution.

Remember to have a good breakfast so that you won't feel too hungry by breaktime.

A letter will be coming home this evening offering parents a free 3 week course using the Thurrock Adult community college mobile classroom. Starting on Monday, 7th June, 2010 at 1pm, the course will highlight the potential risks when children use the internet.

The Time Out Zone

Our new Time Out Zone is used in various ways. In order to clarify procedures, children may attend the Time Out Zone for several reasons, some of which are indicated below:

to discuss grievances with the Behaviour Supervisor in order to seek resolution
as a time-out space to calm down and re-focus any inappropriate behaviour
to stop disruptive behaviour in class that prevents others from learning effectively and
for consistently refusing to follow school rules or reasonable instructions

It may be necessary for the Behaviour Supervisor to telephone parents if their child has had to spend more than half a lesson or if they are missing more than three play or lunchtimes in one week, or if they have been sent to the Time Out Zone more than three times in a week.

It is hoped that by providing such an area, pupils will be able to find solutions to disagreements they may have with their peers and that the vast majority of pupils will find their learning time less disrupted by a minority of pupils who find managing their own behaviour in the classroom difficult.

East Tilbury Junior School Dance Troop - 'Trip the Light Fantastic'

On Tuesday, 19 children from Years 3 and 4 demonstrated their dancing talents by performing at the St. Clere's Dance Festival. They performed an Olympic inspired dance to 'Don't Stop me Now'. On Monday, 22nd March, ETJS played Giffards Primary. After a superb performance and win the previous week, the whole team were eager to make it two consecutive wins. East Tilbury did not let themselves down. Their continuing drive and determination from start to finish resulted in an outstanding team performance.

Every player showed their best individual performance of the season by far with some impressive team goals. The goal scorers were Harry Gregory (4), Jake Nickels (1) and Harry Woodrow (5).

The final score was 10-0 to East Tilbury. The whole team were awarded Man of the Match.

Water

Please ensure that your child has a filled bottle of water with them on a daily basis. Bottles must have sports tops. With the warmer weather children need to rehydrate more frequently. Water fountains in the playground are only used at playtime and lunchtime. Plastic water bottles can be purchased at the school office for 65p. Bottled water is on sale at breaktime at a cost of 30p.

Co-op Chelmsford Star Community Card

A Fun Sporty Day at ETJS!

Sport Relief is back! The whole of the UK came together to get active, raise cash and change lives on Friday.

Sport Relief has a unique history of dedicated people doing extraordinary things to make a difference - from David Walliams' swim across the Channel to Eddie Izzard's amazing marathon a day around the UK.

Paul Duligall, an ex-pupil of ETJS (and whose Auntie is Mrs. Oakley in the office) recently took part in rugby player Lawrence Dallaglio's Cycle Slam and cycled frosm Paris to Twickenham to raise money for Sport Relief. He raised over £1,500 and Prince Harry was there to congratulate the cyclists at the end of the journey.

All the money raised by the public is spent by Comic Relief to help transform the lives of poor and vulnerable people both at home and across the world's poorest countries.

Your fundraising cash might be spent helping children in Africa get into primary school or suppoting an older person in the UK to meet other poople so that they feel less lonely.

Here at ETJS we had a fun day of activities which the children enjoyed. The activities included:

Finding out about famous sports personalities
Hula hooping
Sports quiz

The current total of our fund raising is £353.54 all of which will be donated to Sports Relief.

Sports Relief

On Friday, 19th March, we are participating in Sports Relief. Pupils can wear any sports clothing/kit on this day for a donation of 50p. There will be sports related activities throughout the day with a team event which will involve laps around the field. There will be a £1 charge to compete in the events and all money collected will be donated to Sports Relief. The activities have a fun element and pupils do not have to be sporty to take part.

Dinner Money

Football Report

On Friday, 5th March, East Tilbury Junior School played Horndon Primary. All the players were hungry for their first win in the league. The team rose to the challenge and started well, scoring three quick goals in succession. Unfortunately, the team began to get a little complacent and conceded two careless goals. ETJS re-organised and scored another two goals. The final score was 6-3. Well done to Harry Woodrow who got his first hat trick of the season and also to Harry Gregory for his first goal of the season. Joe Carson and Callum Clarke also played well as second half substitutes with Callum receiving man of the match for a spectacular finish and his second goal of the season.
